Making the decision and taking the first step is the most difficult. If it succeeds, the next will gradually happen and everyone will be satisfied with the result. This is how the situation with the renovation of multi-apartment buildings, which has been carried out in Latvia for more than ten years with the help of EU funds, can be described in two short sentences. However, the biggest obstacle in achieving significant results so far has been taking the first step or getting the residents’ agreement on the renovation of the building. How to overcome it and increase residents’ interest and involvement?
Answers to these questions will be sought on March 9 at 15.00 in discussion with Māris Saulājs, Financial advisory manager of SEB, Ieva Vērzemniece, Head of ALTUM’s Energy Efficiency Programs Department, and Kārlis Beihmanis, Liepāja City Council’s Project Manager for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

The aim of the Open Workshop Series in Business and Management Studies is to promote top-quality academic and applied research in various fields of the social sciences. This is a unique opportunity for sharing knowledge and networking with local and international community members.

Speaker: Nicolas Gavoille, Associate Professor, SSE Riga

The labor markets of many transition countries are characterized by two features: a spike at the minimum wage in wage distribution and widespread use of so-called envelope wages, i.e., non-declared cash coming in addition to the official wage. The interactions between minimum wage policy and tax evasion however remain largely unknown. In this talk, I will provide an overview of three recent papers coauthored with Anna Zasova investigating this interaction in Latvia.

First, we examine the large spike at the exactly the minimum wage in the wage distribution. Are tax evaders overrepresented among minimum wage earners? Beyond anecdotal evidence, only scarce concrete evidence documents this point. We present a body of suggestive evidence highlighting the prevalence of wage underreporting among minimum wage earners in Latvia.

Second, we use audit data and detailed administrative firm-level information to estimate the share of firms likely to underreport employees’ wage in Latvia. We train several machine learning algorithms on the set of audited firms, evaluate their out-of-sample performance and then apply them to non-audited firms. Our results indicate that nearly 40% of firms are likely to be involved in labor tax evasion, with large heterogeneity across sectors.

Third, we study firm-level employment effects of a large and biting minimum wage increase in the context of widespread wage underreporting. We show that firms engaged in labor tax evasion are insensitive to the minimum wage shock. Our results indicate that these firms use wage underreporting as an adjustment margin, converting (part of) undeclared cash payments into legal wage. Increasing minimum wage contributes to tax rule enforcement, but this comes at the cost of negative employment consequences for compliant firms.

You are kindly invited to attend the workshop ” The poison milk scandal 2008 – Policy experimentation, covert deception and institutional change” by Tomas Karlsson.
The aim of the Open Workshop Series in Business and Management Studies is to promote top-quality academic and applied research in various fields of the social sciences. This is a unique opportunity for sharing knowledge and networking with local and international community members.
Speaker: Assoc. prof. Tomas Karlsson, Chalmers University of Technology
In 2008, the Chinese milk powder scandal was unfolding. An increasing number of kidney failures were found in infant children and the cause was traced back to the consumption of domestically produced milk powder. It was estimated that roughly 300 000 infant children were affected and eight died from the direct health consequences. Our study traces the preconditions for the scandal, the scandal in itself and the consequences of the scandal from an institutional perspective. As such it provides insights to the process of institutional change, and the role of agentic managerial actions in the context of a transition economy.
Tomas Karlsson is an associate professor at Chalmers University of Technology.
He has published in the field of institutional theory and entrepreneurship for 18 years investigating for example the link between institutional pressures and business planning (JOM, 2004; Dissertation 2005; and JBV 2008), a literature review on the topic of entrepreneurship from an institutional perspective (ETP, 2016). Tomas has also served as associate editor for Academy of Management Learning and Education. Other topics he is interested in includes entrepreneurship education, university tech transfer and entrepreneurial networks.

A comparison between individual and cultural strategies of learning from failure” by Börje Boers.

The aim of the Open Workshop Series in Business and Management Studies is to promote top-quality academic and applied research in various fields of the social sciences. This is a unique opportunity for sharing knowledge and networking with local and international community members.

Date: November 25, 15-17.00
Venue: Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Strelnieku iela 4a, Riga. Room: W32

Speaker: Assoc. prof. Börje Boers, University of Skövde, Sweden

The aim of this exploratory study is to research individual and cultural strategies of learning from failure amongst German, Indian and Swedish university students. Study provides (1) a framework of typal similarities of failure learning within the national cultures of Germany, India and Sweden, as well as (2) understanding of cultural effects on failure learning and (3) insights for entrepreneurship educators to develop programs that steer discussions and reflections on the event of failure as a likely part of the entrepreneurial process. The results show that both culture-based strategies as well as culturally independent typical subjectivities in learning from failure exist for the three nations Germany, India and Sweden. The defined typologies can broaden our understanding of learning from failure at an intermediate level, bridging the gap between cultural and individual factors. Furthermore, the paper showcases the suitability of Q methodology to bring to front individual beliefs as well as group-specific opinions in higher education by discussing the methodological capabilities and challenges as experienced during our study.

Börje Boers is an associate professor at the University of Skövde, Sweden. He got his PhD from Jönköping International Business School in Sweden. His research interest concerns small and medium-sized enterprises and family businesses. Recently, he is working on the effects of crises, such as the Corona-pandemic, on SMEs. His focus in general is on questions of entrepreneurship in these type of companies. He received funding, amongst others, from the Family Kamprad Foundation to investigate the effects of the Corona-pandemic on SMEs.

You are kindly invited to attend the workshop “Towards technological takoffs. Exploring digital technologies diffusion patterns – new frameworks and empirical evidence.” by Assoc. prof. Ewa Lechman.

Ewa Lechman is an Associate Professor of Economics, since 2002 employed at Faculty of Management and Economics Gdańsk University of Technology / Fahrenheit Universities.

The aim of the Open Workshop Series in Business and Management Studies is to promote top-quality academic and applied research in various fields of the social sciences. This is a unique opportunity for sharing knowledge and networking with local and international community members.

In recent decades, the world has witnessed, unprecedented in terms of speed and geographic coverage, diffusion of new information and communication technologies (ICT). This digital revolution pervasively impacts and reshapes societies and economies and therefore deserves special attention and interest.

However, much academic debate not only concentrates on the effects that digital technologies bring, but it also intends to explore the digital technologies diffusion trajectories along with identification of the fundamental determinants of this process.

ESI Student Innovation Program of the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga invites you to participate in an open workshop by SSE Riga Open Workshop Series on “Recipes for opportunity recognition in the tension field of knowledge and learning. The case of converging industries.”
Speaker: Assoc.prof. Rainer Harms, University Twente, the Netherlands.
To recognize opportunities, entrepreneurs rely on knowledge and learning. Particularly in situations where entrepreneurs combine knowledge from different industries, the relationship between prior knowledge and learning can be complex. Despite the relevance of these multi-domain knowledge contexts, most studies on opportunity recognition seem to undertheorize these complexities. To embrace complexity, we apply a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) based on a sample of 107 corporate entrepreneurs. We identify several configurations of knowledge types and learning.

ESI Student Innovation Program of the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga invites you to participate in an open workshop by SSE Riga Open Workshop Series on “Intractable Conflict Diversity in Entrepreneurial Teams”
The workshop will be held in English and will take place at Stockholm School of Economics in Riga on February 24, 15-17.00.
Speaker: Dr Vita Kadile, Leeds University Business School, UK.
Diversity has increasingly become a topic at the forefront of efforts in companies across the globe to create inclusion and enable organizational effectiveness. It is highly sought after on boards, in top management teams, and at all levels of organizations. Though the benefits diversity can bring to teams are well-established, managing diverse teams is fraught with challenges that have increasingly attracted scholarly attention. Diversity includes differing characteristics among individuals along a variety of dimensions, including those visible on the ‘surface-level’ such as demographic characteristics, and the ‘deep-level’ dimensions that are less readily apparent (such as personality traits, preferences and values). This study focuses on diversity in entrepreneurial founding teams, where diversity by design can have a strategic impact.
Dr Vita Kadile is an Assistant Professor of Marketing at Leeds University Business School in the UK. While her teaching predominantly focuses on research methods for marketing, her research expertise lies in cognitive and behavioural entrepreneurship, investigating business start-ups, international and strategic marketing. Her work has been published in various entrepreneurship, management and marketing journals (e.g., ISBJ, JSBM, IMM, TFSC). She has received the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Research Impact beyond Academia in 2016 for her work on an international franchising project with a UK-based retailer where the findings have informed the development of improved managerial practices and resulting organisational change. Vita has served as an Assistant Managing Editor at the Journal of International Marketing for 6 years and has organised and chaired special sessions at the AMA Global Marketing SIG conferences in 2018 and 2022. Recently, she has been working on developing several entrepreneurship courses for Goldman Sachs as part of their online programme (the Innovation Strategy course is currently available on Coursera). Vita’s consultancy work primarily deals with market research and entrepreneurial competencies.

ESI Student Innovation Program of the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga invites you to participate in an open workshop by SSE Riga Open Workshop Series on “The Relationship of Technological and Organizational Innovation with Firm Performance”
The workshop will be held in English and will take place at Stockholm School of Economics in Riga on March 10, 15-17.00.
Speaker: Professor Maaja Vadi, University of Tartu, Estonia
This presentation will explore the dynamic nature of complementarities between technological and organizational innovation at firms. Using Spanish firm level panel data (PITEC) over period 2008-2016, it investigates how the formation, keeping and ending of the joint adoption of these two core types of innovation is associated with firm performance. In the case of the general static test of complementarities we find no evidence of complementarities. However, once we focus on the analysis of within-firm changes in the complementarity bundle of innovation types, we observe clear evidence that some sequential as well as simultaneous strategy switches towards combining technological and organizational novelties are associated with significant performance premia at firms. Our findings point out the key role of technological innovation in these complementarities. We find that full dissolution of the previous complementarity bundle of the two innovation types has a strong negative association with firm performance in next years. In the case of dissolving the complementarity bundle of innovation types, the key disadvantage for next periods’ firm performance is related to dropping the technological innovation. Giving up only organizational innovation while keeping the technological innovation appears to have no negative effect, on average, on firm performance. Firms with lesser capabilities allocate the managerial attention across different activities and objectives, clearly opt for less use of the potentially performance-enhancing complementary combinations of innovations. These firms are much more likely to give up the joint adoption of innovation types even if that configuration was reached in previous periods. For many firms, the retention of the joint adoption of technological and organizational innovation over time is an expensive choice.
Maaja Vadi is Professor of Management in the University of Tartu, Estonia. In addition to the role of a professor, she had worked as the head of chair, institute and dean of faculty. She has also conducted academic lectures in the USA, Australia, Japan, Iceland, France, Slovenia, and Sweden. Her main areas of research and teaching are related to various problems of innovation, organizational behavior, organizational and national culture. She has published articles in journals (California Management Review, Technovation, Management International Review, International Journal of Manpower, International Journal of Cross Cultural Management, Journal of Health Organization and Management, Cross Cultural Management: An International Journal etc.), edited books (i.e. by Emerald (Dis)honesty in Management: Manifestations and Consequences) and special issues of journals. Maaja Vadi is a member of editorial board of several international academic journals. She has lead and work on various international projects financed by European Commission, and several Estonian institutions and the consultant for many companies and governmental organizations in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, and Finland. Maaja Vadi received a Ph.D in 2000 at University of Tartu.

Open Workshop series continues with workshop: Making impact beyond academia: research, policy- and industry cooperation applied.
Date: March 31, 15-17.00
Venue: Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Strelnieku iela 4a, Riga. Room: W32
Speaker: Professor Arnis Sauka, Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Latvia.
It has been argued that academic performance, especially in the fields of entrepreneurship, management, and strategy, cannot be judged merely by looking at the quality of academic publications and teaching. Yet, even though most articles include a policy suggestions section, cooperation between entrepreneurship and management researchers, industry and policymakers still have substantial potential. This presentation will explore how a ‘research product’ which originates from a Ph.D. dissertation, has been developed to attract interest from industry and policymakers as well as, through mass media coverage, a wider audience. I will present how this has helped to influence policy debate as well as how interaction with industry and policymakers contributes to an extended research pipeline (and vice versa). I will draw on my experience working within the field of research and policy debate on the shadow economy in the three Baltic countries, and beyond.

The aim of the Open Workshop Series in Business and Management Studies is to promote top-quality academic and applied research in various fields of the social sciences. This is a unique opportunity for sharing knowledge and networking with local and international community members.
Emotional support is not just externally obtained by entrepreneurs, but also individually created through agency and networking. In this study, we aim to understand the dynamic relation between emotional support and perceived venture goal progress as it evolves over time. We employ a repeated measurement design of up to 10 measurements over twelve months from 86 entrepreneurs participating in a Danish startup program. We find that emotional support enhances perceived venture goal progress, and that venture goal progress boosts emotional social support continuously in a dynamic loop. We also show how brokerage behavior works as a boundary condition for the dynamic support-progress link. Authors of the study are Mette Søgaard Nielsen, Kim Klyver & Pekka Stenholm.
Kim Klyver is professor in entrepreneurship at University of Southern Denmark and adjunct professor at University of Adelaide. Before becoming a full professor, he has held postdoc positions at Swinburne University of Technology (2006), Stanford University (2009), as part-time visiting scholar at Stockholm School in Economics (2017-20). Kim’s main research interests include entrepreneurship, social capital (social networks), crises, gender, and institutional theory. His research has received several scientific rewards internationally.

More detailed information about the course you can find in the course outline.

In order to join the course, the following questionnaire should be filled in.
